Itinerary

Day 1Khukh Lake

The full name of the lake is the Blue Lake of Black Heart. Black Heart is the pointed topped mountain on the north side of the lake. The stone ruins of a ger with a diameter of 15 meters on the south side of this lake could be the ruins of the palace ger where Chinggis Khaan was proclaimed khaan. There are also wooden statues in the forest dedicated to Chingis Khaan and the next 36 khans of Mongolia. The surrounding area of Khukh Nuur is quiet, peaceful and wonderful for hiking & relaxation.

Day 2Baldan Bereeven Monastery

The monastery was built in the 1700s. At its peak use it was one of the largest monasteries and Buddhist centers in Mongolia with up to 7000 monks living there. All of the monastery buildings were destroyed by the communist in 1937. Now restoration work of the monastery is under way and some temples, numerous carved Buddhas on the steep rock and other truly interesting Buddhist sites are available to see and enjoy visiting. Some ancient Deer Stone Monuments are not far from the monastery.

Day 3Uglugchiin kherem (Uglugch Wall)

Oglogch Wall is located at the base of Daichin Mountain, 45km southwest of Batshireet soum. The wall, 3km in length, is made entirely of stones without the use of mortar. When Russian archeologist S.Kondratiev explored the site in 1926, the wall was 2.5-4.5 meters in height. Today it stands 3.1 meters tall at its highest point. Last summer, Mongolian-American joint expedition team “Genghis Khan” discovered approximately 60 tombs near the wall. The archeologists believe that Oglochiin Kherem may be a burial place of great Mongolian figures, such as Genghis or Kublai Khan.

Day 4Binder and Kherlen River

The secret history of the Mongols says Chinggis khan announced him as a king in near Binder sum. The Kherlen is one of the three famous rivers which rise in the Khentii mountain Range, and it flows for 1.264 kilometers. An honorary monument at Khodoo Aral near the Kherlen River was dedicated to Genghis Khan. Historians write that the khan came to power at Khodoo Aral, an area from which he later emerged to unite the nomadic tribes of Mongolia. Ogoodei Khan and Munkh Khan were later enthroned at Khodoo Aral.

Day 5Deluun Boldog

It is said in the “ The Secret history of the Mongols “, Chinggis Khaan was born in a place called Deluun Boldog that is located in Dadal Sum. Deluun Boldog is considered the birthplace of Chinggis Khaan . In 1962, Khentii province officials created a monument to the memory of Chinggis Khaan for his 800th birthday anniversary. Khajuu Bulag, the spring where Chinggis was washed after he was born, is not far from the monument where you can drink from the same spring he did.

Day 6Kherlen Bars city ruins

Kherlen Bars Hot was city of Kidan, in the basin of the Kherlen River in eastern Mongolia. It occupied an area of 1600×1800 meters and was surrounded by mud walls, which stands at 1.5-2 meters high and 4 meters thick. A remnant of a stupa is found near the walls. There used to be pair of them, and the Soviet garrison used cannon fire to destroy one of the stupas as amusement in the 1940s.

Day 7Khentii province

We will explore Genghis city and visit the museum there.

Day 8Terelj National Park

It has been the strictly protected area since 1965. It’s connected with Ulaanbaatar by a paved road. The park wildlife includes brown bears, grey wolves, foxes and over two hundred species of birds. Also the Tuul river flows through the national park. The Gorkhi-Terelj National park has many rock formations for rock climbers. We will explore the Turtle rock and hike to the Ariyapala meditation center.

Day 9Genghis Khan statue and Ulaanbaatar

The Genghis Khan Statue, part of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex is a 40-metre (130 ft) tall statue of Genghis Khan on horseback, on the bank of the Tuul river at Tsonjin Boldog. The statue is symbolically pointed east towards his birthplace. It is on top of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor centre, itself 10 meters (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 from Genghis to Ligdan Khan.
